The scent of eggs, bacon and fresh bread from the local market is only half of what keeps the 70 to 100 attendees of Willmot Community Hub’s community breakfast coming back each week. It’s also a place for people to connect with one another and ask for support.

“I have grown as a person over the last 15 months, and I know doing this has helped me gain a lot of knowledge, not just about gardening but about myself,” says Jim*. Jesuit Community College, in partnership with the Department of Justice and Community Safety, runs the program to support men who are in contact with the justice system. Through it, participants serve their community work hours by growing produce that will be donated to local food relief programs.

Access to proper medical attention and care is critical for anyone’s health. For the residents of Willmot, it has made a monumental difference to the entire community. After noticing the lack of medical services available for families in the area, the Willmot Community Hub began advocating strongly to have a nurse and paediatric clinic under its own roof.

For the first time in his life, he now looks forward to school every day. “I didn’t like any teachers at my old school, but I don’t mind some of the teachers here, so that’s good and it’s cool. “When I do art, I am free.” Thuc's story
Thuc Tran, a participant in Jesuit Social Services’ Western Metro Mental Health and Wellbeing Connect program (MHWC), which supports the family members and carers of people with mental illness and substance use issues, is a true testament to the power of community support. Born in Vietnam, Thuc immigrated to Australia as a refugee with her family 1995. Thuc entered our MHWC program after feeling overwhelmed by her caring responsibilities for her 14-year-old son.
