A nation-wide support program for people aged 16 and over with severe mental health challenges who are not receiving NDIS support.

How does the program help?

Commonwealth Psychosocial Support assists people who have psychosocial support needs to meet their own personal goals and make a recovery plan.

We believe that recovery is an individual process and that with the right kind of support, each person can move towards living a meaningful, hopeful and contributing life that matches their values and goals for the future. The support received is based on what is important to them.

The program can assist with:

  • connections with community and other support services
  • setting and meeting goals in mental health, physical health, education, training, social life and daily living
  • appropriate referrals to mental health, housing, community and allied health services
  • flexible after-hours support (Jesuit Social Services only)
  • support in linking to the NDIS where appropriate.

In partnership with cohealth, which coordinates all referrals, Jesuit Social Services delivers Commonwealth Psychosocial Support in Melbourne’s west.

I had trouble with coping or trusting anyone. Having someone that had my best interest at heart, and who I knew I could trust, helped me. My dad tells me that after being with [my Jesuit Social Services worker] for a day, I sound much happier and have direction.

How does the program work?

Using an evidence-informed, recovery-focused approach, participants spend time with an experienced mental health support worker to learn strategies and develop skills that help build independence and improve wellbeing.

Support is tailored to meet each participant’s needs, and can be accessed for up to 12 months.

Commonwealth Psychosocial Support runs in partnership with cohealth, who manages all intakes before referring relevant participants to Jesuit Social Services.

Who can participate?

Support is available to people 16 years and over who:

  • are in need of community-based mental health support
  • experience severe mental health issues
  • are not currently receiving NDIS funding
  • live in or are connected to Melbourne’s west.

Where is the program offered?

Commonwealth Psychosocial Support is a national program organised through Primary Health Networks. Visit the Federal Government’s website to see where the program is delivered.

With cohealth, Jesuit Social Services delivers the CPS to people living or working in the Brimbank, Hobson’s Bay City, Maribyrnong, Moorabool and Wyndham regions of Melbourne.
