Jesuit Social Services has been working since 1977 to support young people with complex challenges in their lives. Much of this work has been focused on young people in contact with the criminal justice system.
We work hard to keep children and young people out of prison. We do this by forming relationships with them and from that foundation we provide a range of services including housing, mental health services, support to re-engage with education and assistance to get on a pathway to training and employment.
Many of the young people we work with have been excluded from education – often, for years. Some of those caught up the in the criminal justice system need a focused, tailored program to help them get back on a track and fulfil their potential in a school environment that understands their complex lives and the trauma they may have experienced. This led Jesuit Social Services to establish the Ignatius Learning Centre – a small, specialist secondary school for young people in contact with the justice system and at risk of spending time in prison.
The Ignatius Learning Centre is a safe, holistic and therapeutic learning environment for a small number of young people who have a positive attitude towards getting their lives back on track. The school promotes the development of the whole person – including intellectual, physical, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual elements of each young person.
Our teachers are all highly experienced educators and are supported by a team of staff specialising in youth work, trauma informed practice and more.
We engage students and their families to tailor a learning plan that is culturally appropriate, focused on the student’s own interests and goals, and is both practical and useful to help the student move on to further education, training or employment.
The Ignatius Learning Centre is a Catholic Specialist Secondary School located in Richmond.
Drawing on our Jesuit heritage, the Ignatius Learning Centre is guided by Jesuit Social Services’ practice framework, Ignatian Pedagogy, Catholic Social Teaching and evidence based educational practice.
We foster life-long learning by providing a holistic education, enabling students to heal, learn, and experience success in a safe and supportive learning environment. By providing an education that fosters responsibility and transformation, the Ignatius Learning Centre restores hope, offers a sense of belonging and enables students to flourish and reach their potential.
The curriculum we offer our students is the Victorian Certificated of Applied Learning (VCAL). Students will work towards completing VCAL (Foundation, Intermediate and Senior); a practical option for students in Years 11 and 12 which provides work-related experience and a qualification, recognised by TAFE institutes and employers, helping students move from school into work, an apprenticeship or traineeship, further training or higher education.
