This submission responds to the Victorian Government’s scoping of a new approach to supporting vulnerable young people in 2013.

It highlights Jesuit Social Services’ concern that the underpinning services system lacks the capacity to meet the needs of vulnerable children and young people.

The submission calls for a new approach to supporting vulnerable young people that involves:

  • capacity building and expanding partnerships based on existing services;
  • further analysis about the strengths, weaknesses and gaps in existing services;
  • expanding the target age limit for young people from 18 years to 25 years; and
  • addressing young people’s life transitions – to further education or employment, to independent living, from adolescent to adult relationships, and into parenting roles.
