Jesuit Social Services strongly believes addressing family violence requires tackling its root causes – supporting men and boys to live respectful, accountable, and fulfilling lives, and addressing the entrenched disadvantage that contributes to violence.

We were pleased to make a recent submission to the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children Consultation to convey this belief, and our recommendations for a strong and effective National Plan.

Summary of our recommendations

  • Promote cultural and attitudinal change around issues of masculinity to support the primary prevention of violence.
  • Together with adequate resources for responding to family violence, fund the development, delivery and evaluation of approaches that intervene early to address violence and other harmful behaviours.
  • Fund the production and sharing of knowledge about the attitudes of men and boys, including how these attitudes can impact behaviours.
