About the program

Breaking The Cycle (Adolescent Family Violence) – 18 month pilot initiative

Drawing on Jesuit Social Services’ many years of experience in working with young people involved with the justice system, using Family Group Conferencing and restorative practice interventions, this 18 month pilot will trial this approach in the context of young people who perpetrate family violence in the home.  Family Group Conferences will be convened between the victim (usually a parent or sibling), the young person and their respective support networks (eg school).

The Family Group Conference and then targeted follow up casework support, aim to provide an effective community rehabilitation intervention that improves family safety by addressing issues that contribute to a young person’s behaviour/s. It is a process that creates an opportunity for dialogue between people affected by conflict. It takes a problem-solving approach to the presenting situation and addresses the needs of all participants.   This pilot aims to intervene early in the cycle, to divert young people away from possible involvement with the criminal justice system and improve the safety of families.

Family Group Conferencing

Family Group Conferencing is a non-legislated approach to working with the victims and perpetrators of adolescent family violence based on restorative justice principles. It takes into consideration the expressed needs of the victim, the perpetrator, and those affected by the harm of family violence. Family Group Conferencing aims to transform conflict into cooperation, harness that cooperation for problem-solving, prevent further harm, promote well-being and develop a pragmatic plan to coordinate community based resources to provide support and oversight.

About the role

You will work as part of an integrated team providing group conferencing facilitation and case management to young men referred to this new and innovative program.

To be successful in this role you will ensure young people referred to the program are: linked to family, community and culture; have pathways to economic participation;  and have a range of supports and services where needed in relation to health, housing and developmental needs.

Candidate requirements

The Senior Casework Practitioner will be an experienced youth and family caseworker with a real talent for engaging and building positive rapport with young people.

To be successful in this position, you will be experienced in, and/or have knowledge of, the Family Violence system, relevant Legislation, processes and procedures with the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working arrangements with a range of stakeholders; both Government and non Government to trial the integration of the new model within this system and the wider community.

You will also have an understanding of the issues which may affect people who are in contact with the family violence system including; abuse and trauma, substance use, family breakdown, homelessness, mental illness and disrupted education.
