People’s ability to engage in education, training and employment is crucial – not only for their development, but for building a socially cohesive society where people can access well-paid, secure jobs. Yet many people in Australia face significant barriers to accessing these pathways, and government efforts to address them are lagging.
Jesuit Social Services therefore welcomes the opportunity to provide input to the Legislative Assembly Economic and Infrastructure Committee’s inquiry into how to better guide and support students to pursue employment in industries that are in demand.
We urge the Committee to consider a whole-of-system approach to preparing young people for work in in-demand industries—one that prioritises equity, wellbeing, and practical, supported access to training and employment. The students most at risk of being left behind are often those with the most to gain from a meaningful, supported transition into the workforce. With the right investment and partnerships, Victoria can lead the nation in ensuring all young people, regardless of background, have a real chance at a productive and purposeful future.
