Jesuit Social Services has joined forces with ICON Construction to drive cultural change in the construction sector, fostering workplaces where respect and inclusion are the norm. This partnership will equip men in leadership roles with the tools to challenge outdated ideas of masculinity, promote well-being, and create safer, more inclusive environments for women, girls, and gender-diverse people.
Research from Jesuit Social Services’ Man Box study underscores the urgency of this work, showing that men who most strongly conform to rigid masculine norms are more likely to perpetrate violence against women, experience poor mental health, and engage in risky behaviours. By confronting these entrenched attitudes, this initiative aims to redefine masculinity in ways that support both individual and collective well-being.
As part of this collaboration, Jesuit Social Services will implement a targeted program across ICON Construction sites. Leadership teams will participate in an intensive two-day training, empowering them to model and advocate for positive change. A network of ‘site champions’ will receive bystander intervention training, equipping them to challenge harmful behaviour and influence their peers. Regular toolbox talks will reinforce these efforts, embedding a culture of accountability and respect across the workforce.
This initiative aligns with broader industry efforts to improve gender equity, including Homes Victoria’s Building Equality Policy (2022), which seeks to break down systemic barriers within state government-funded projects. By prioritising respect and inclusion, this partnership represents a bold step toward reshaping workplace culture in the construction industry.
Jesuit Social Services and ICON Construction are committed to building the infrastructure for a workforce where individuals are equipped and empowered to be active participants in dismantling harmful behaviours. We look forward to the meaningful change this partnership with ICON Construction will create in our workplaces and communities.
