Flemington children share love of learning with supporter - Jesuit Social Services

Our Chief Operating Officer, Michael Livingstone, was delighted to host Ruth Spielman, Chair of the Stan Willis Trust, for a visit to our Flemington Homework Club in June.

Committed to engaging people in Melbourne’s western suburbs to level the playing field so that all get a ‘fair-go’, the Trust is one of a number that help fund our Homework Club, which has been an important service to the local community for more than 20 years.

Ruth enjoyed seeing how engaged children from 5-18 years were in learning, with many telling her what a difference the help of our volunteers makes to them.

“Talking to an adult can be boring, but they were just so polite!” said Ruth of two teenage boys she spoke to.

“It’s great to hear what a difference the Homework Club makes to the children, and their parents, and they’ve all said what a help the volunteers are. We’re really proud to support the program”

The students live in and around the Flemington public house estate in Melbourne and come from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Language and literacy barriers and crowded and distracting living environments are just two of the barriers to learning that Homework Club can help them overcome. And it’s so popular there’s a waiting list!

Ruth also met some of our volunteer tutors, who range from retirees to professors to university students, and were pleased to hear there are organisations like the Stan Willis Trust backing the program.
