Andrés, Café Operations participant

“I’m very interested in customer service. I used to do a role over the phones, but I’ve learned that I much prefer face-to-face interactions,” Andrés says.

He’s currently four weeks into the accredited course – which is a mixture of both practical and theory equipping participants with a range of skills as well as certificates in preparing and serving espresso coffee, food handling and responsible service of alcohol (RSA). “The practical has been really fun. We’ve been learning how to make coffees but also working at the Ignite Café.”

I’ve learnt a lot of great skills here, met a lot of great people… Whether you’re looking into hospitality or you love coffee and you have that curiosity about how to make coffees [...] I would recommend this course.

Jesuit Social Services’ Ignite Café is a not-for-profit training café in Camberwell, offering participants on the ground experience in a café setting. As Andrés explains, “the Café experience [at Ignite] is super beneficial, because you’re there in the setting. It’s not a mock setting, it’s the actual setting. I think that’s great because that’s work experience.”

Andrés is complimentary of his trainer, Natasha. “The trainer has been really great. Very down to earth, very friendly. If you have questions she’s always there to listen and help you with anything you’re struggling with.
