We are looking for volunteers to help run our very busy Homework Club on Wednesdays or Thursdays, 4:30-7 pm. Volunteers will support the Homework Club Coordinator in various tasks which includes supervising students, supporting volunteer tutors, liaising with parents and performing general office duties.
About the program
The Homework club is a fun and dynamic environment developed by Jesuit Social Services in September 2004. The Homework Club program is run at the Flemington High rise Estate where there is a high population of people from the Horn of Africa region. This community is primarily made up of Somali and Eritrean people, along with Oromo, Sudanese and Ethiopian people. The Majority of these community members arrived in Australia within the past 10 years, as refugees and migrants, seeking a better future for their families.
Purpose of the Homework Club
Assist the school-aged students to improve their educational opportunities. The students bring the homework tasks set by their school, and tutors assist students with questions and support the student to find answers and completing set work.
Volunteer responsibilities
- Preparing the tutoring site settings
- Ensuring students and tutors sign in and out correctly
- Liaising with parents
- Supervising students and supporting volunteer tutors as required
- Supporting the Homework Club Coordinator as required
- Assisting in gathering forms and general administration duties
Volunteer skills and expectations
- Friendly and genuine interest in supporting young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds in their education.
- Patient and adaptable
- Willingness to understand the structural barriers that may impact a young person’s learning and engagement with education
- Open-minded and curious while maintaining appropriate boundaries with young people
- Willingness to work in a community setting
- Ability to work as part of a team of volunteers
- Strong verbal and written English skills
- Other duties, as may be required
Volunteer requirements
- Have understanding and sympathy with the mission and ethos of Jesuit Social Services
- Comply with relevant legislation including Jesuit Social Services policies and procedure
- Have valid Working with Children Check
- Successful interview, referee check, and Police Check conducted by Jesuit Social Services (at no cost for volunteers)
