Jesuit Social Services’ new General Manager Northern Territory, Jared Sharp, has been recognised at this week’s Northern Territory Human Rights Awards.
Jared, formerly a lawyer with the Northern Territory Aboriginal Justice Agency, received the individual Youth Award for his work with young Indigenous people in the Northern Territory.
Jared was featured in ABC TV’s Four Corners investigation into Darwin’s Don Dale Youth Detention Centre, which resulted in the Federal Government establishing a Royal Commission into the Territory’s youth detention and child protection systems.
After his win, Jared told the ABC: “I hope it encourages other people to stand up and fight for the most vulnerable people in our community because I think we all have that obligation to bear witness when we see injustice to stand up and fight for those who can’t speak for themselves.”
The Making Justice Work coalition, of which Jesuit Social Services is part, also won the Fitzgerald Justice Award at the event. Making Justice Work aims to promote evidence-based approaches to law and order in the Northern Territory.
